The validity period of UTME result, set at 3 years by legislative amendment in 2016 was later suspended, but did you know that there are alternatives whose result is valid for life? Yes! Once you’re successful in the exams, you can use the result to gain admission to 200L of the university of your choice anytime in the future without expiration. Basically, I present you just two of them. There are others which could even be used to study in overseas institutions.
IJMBE, an Approved Alternative to UTME
Interim Joint Matriculation Board Examination (IJMBE) is an approved and valid A-Level program facilitated by Ahmadu Bello University (ABU). It has coordinating offices in many tertiary institutions and partnering study centers all over the country. This program is specially designed for candidates who for one reason or the other could not matriculate through the regular JAMB window.
IJMBE is certified by the Nigeria University Commission (NUC) and approved by the Federal Government of Nigeria, since 1976. This is validated by annual enrolment of roughly 15,000 students out of which not less than 70% make it to 200L of their choice institutions and disciplines through Direct Entry (DE). The program runs for two semester or one academic session, just within a year. During this period, candidates are expected to be located at a study center where they go through intensive lectures in three subjects relevant to their chosen course of study, with English being compulsory. This leads to the final examination of which grades and points can be used for Direct Entry application.
It should be noted that, not all universities in Nigeria accepts IJMBE but not less than 80% of them inclusive of Federal, State and private institutions do. Also note that IJMBE does not have any official website. All the websites parading themselves as official website of IJMBE are running there own business campaign because they have several affiliates and study centers nationwide. As a prospective candidate, it is your responsibility to ensure you’re not a victim of scam.
Interestingly! IJMB/IJMBE, as an alternative to UTME is meant for serious students only. Students must be ready to study hard at the study center so as to excel in the examination. It involves payment for tuition, accommodation, and registration for the exam but the benefits outweighs the cost hugely.
JUPEB, an Approved Alternative to UTME
Joint Preliminary Examination Board (JUPEB) is not as old as IJMBE but its equally approved and certified by appropriate authorities – (FGN & NUC). JUPEB was established and moderated by the University of Lagos (UNILAG), parallel to IJMB. It has organizing offices in many institutions and study centers across the nation.
JUPEB runs for one session where candidates are to offer 3 subjects (relevant to their preferred courses) broken into 12 courses over two semesters. This takes place at a study center and followed by the final examination.
Unlike the other program, JUPEB has an official website, which is http://www.jupeb.edu.ng, though hundreds of imitating websites are in the web space, some of which might be validly affiliated. Prospective candidates must be careful to avoid been scammed!
Endeavour to check Jupeb website http://www.jupeb.edu.ng to see affiliate institutions, examination subjects, past questions, current calendar and so on. Fewer institutions participate in JUPEB than what is obtainable in IJMB but admission of students into 200L of their chosen institution is just as high and prominent.
In all, admission seekers should be conscious of the cost, location of the study center, and their course of study while considering either IJMB or JUPEB as a better alternative to UTME. Once those factors have been taken care of, no one needs to continue wasting time on UTME of which result validity period lasts only a year. But for IJMB or JUPEB, the result/certificate is valid for life. Isn’t this a better alternative to UTME?
