Amazing ability comes from what is termed as disability. Did you see that dancer with the crutch? That was no film trick, I watched the live show.
A person with disability is any person who has a physical or mental impairment that largely limits one or more life activities. International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), comes up on 3rd December, 2017.
The annual observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities was proclaimed by a United Nations General Assembly’s resolution in 1992. It aims to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society and development. It’s also a time to increase awareness on the situation of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.
The theme for this year’s IDPD is "Transformation towards sustainable and resilient society for all".
As enshrined in the 2030 Agenda promises "to leave no one behind", it’s thus appropriate to work with persons with disabilities as both agents of change and beneficiaries of it. By doing so, the much needed inclusive and sustainable development for all would assume expeditious implementation. This include among others, humanitarian action, disaster risk reduction, and urban development.
Ideas on How to Observe the IDPD 2017 in Your Community
Engage the stakeholders: These include government, civil society, communities of persons with disabilities, and the United Nations system. Take advantage of the occasion to collaborative on strategies for ensuring that persons with disabilities are carried along in developmental issues as agents and beneficiaries.
Organize events: This could be forums, public discussions and information campaigns around the theme for this year’s IDPD. Have conversation and share ways of including and empowering persons with varying disabilities.
Show appreciation: Organize events to appreciate the contributions made by persons with disabilities as agents of change in their communities. Encourage persons with disabilities by creating enabling environments to help realize, maximize and unleash their potentials.
