Renown neurosurgeon, Dr. Benjamin Carson recounted his ordeal with the circumstances of life and how he was able to overcome them. Despite haven an absentee father, grown up in the inner city, least performance at his grade levels, bad temper and an illiterate single parent, Ben went ahead to become the Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital and has received more than 60 honorary doctorate. His career life began to take a positive turn due to the relentless challenge posed to him and his brother by their proactive mother, Sonya Carson who would always remind her son that he has a brain and he can do anything.
In You Have a Brain: A Teen’s Guide to Think Big, Dr. Carson unveiled the eight powerful principles that were instrumental in shaping his future. The eight components of thinking big was formed into an acronym, T.H.I.N.K. B.I.G. – Talent, Honesty, Insight, being Nice, Knowledge, Books, In-Depth learning, and God. Each item was validated by the stories of events and people who demonstrated the essence of those principles in his life.
The author shared his personal study habit, those that worked and those that didn’t, thereby making available some solid advice with a high level of subtlety. An average teenager would no doubt be able to relate or identify with the narratives. The book is quite helpful in developing good study habits, choosing a career as well as depending on God above all. That he shared the ways in which he became successful against all the odds makes it easy to apply those principles directly to your career situation with the hope that if someone as down-trodden as that could turn out well, you too can.
