Breaking! George Weah Declared Liberia’s President, What’s Your Excuse?

George Weah

As we transit into another year, many people would definitely be inspired by the news of George Weah’s presidency. George Weah could not hold back his emotion as the echo of the official announcement vibrate across Monrovia. He tweeted on his official page…

"My fellow Liberians, I deeply feel the emotion of all the nation. I measure the importance and the responsibility of the immense task which I embrace today. Change is on"

This is a man who admitted being a high school drop-out in 2005 and consequently suffered huge political setback. He had dropped out of secondary school to pursue a promising football career as a teen. He failed to achieve his aim of being elected as the president and as the Vice President. He even failed to get his country to the FIFA World Cup, though he was three times Africa’s best and one time World best footballer of the year.

Instead of looking for crutches with which to manage his handicap, he decided to acquire wings to fly. How do I mean? Mr. Weah returned to classroom after loosing to Sirleaf to conclude high school at age 39. He then proceeded to bag his first degree and Masters in Management at DeVry University. He seldom allow his defeat by the Harvard schooled Nobel Laureate to send him to oblivion. Rather he rose up to the occasion and came back better. And now at 51, he became his country’s president. The first ex-footballer ever to be so elected!

In politics, he was not given chance within the elite political parties. He had to be active in setting up a new political party on which ticket he ran for political offices and became a Senator in 2014.

He was involved in humanitarian efforts so much to the recognition of UNICEF. This serves as a plus to his popularity and further endeared him to the citizens.

Common! That excuse is not good enough! It’s not too early or too late to become the person in your dream. No difficulty is strong enough to stop you. You may have to go back to school, take a course, form and association or what have you. The key is being unrelenting in doing what is required of you.

In our country, we have seen theater artist, sport persons, musicians, and farmers attain some political heights either through election or appointment. But it has never happened in this dimension! Gorge Weah’s story is an evidence that anyone who cares to give it all it takes can aim at the sun and hit it! Across the continent, we need unconventional politicians as this to keep challenging status quos. Let’s breathe some fresh air at least!

We heartily congratulate George Weah and hope this will translate to the desired development for Liberia.
