From Footballer to President – a Piece of George Weah’s Secret

George Weah

Dreams still come true, even if you are an African, Senator George Weah is another testimonial! The West African state of Liberia has been in the world record for certain good news. The first elected female president in Africa who doubles as a Nobel Peace Prize awardee, is one. The first African World best footballer of the year 1995 is another. The country had survived two civil war and epidemic case of Ebola disease, yet you can’t ignore magnificent feats attained by her citizens.

Geroge Weah went head to head with the incumbent Vice President Joseph Boakai in a 2017 general election. The election was not conclusive and had to culminate in a run-off later in the year. Although, the electoral commission said that it would announce official results on Thursday 28th, December, preliminary results monitored via electronic media reveals that Senator Weah leads in excess of 50%.

Online media is already agog with congratulatory messages, especially among the football camaraderie. Confederation of African Football (CAF) posts on its verified Twitter page: "Congratulations George Weah! Former Ballon Dór winner & current President of Liberia."

How Did George Weah Get Here?

His first shot at presidency in 2005 almost hit the net as he lost to the Harvard-schooled Ellen Johnson Sirleaf in the run-off. Weah has been active in the country’s partisan politics, campaigning for candidates under the party he helped to form, Congress for Democratic Change. He contested the Montserrado County’s senatorial sit with Robert Sirleaf, the President’s son in a 2014 election. By an overwhelming 78% to 11%, George Weah won the election.

George Weah announced his intention to run for the President of Liberia in 2016. The general election held on October 10, 2017 did not produce any winner with majority vote, so a run-off had to be held between the top two candidates. And on December 26, 2017 following a Supreme Court dismissal of the suit filed by the third placed candidate, the run-off election was held. As at midnight of December 27, 2017, preliminary results reveals that George Weah leads in 13 out of 15 counties.

A Piece of George Weah’s Secret

How come an African achieved the coveted FIFA World Player of the Year? How come a footballer was elected his country’s President? It has taken Dream – holding a desire in your heart which you must pursue and fulfil. It has taken Vision – seeing things not as they are but as they could be. It has taken Courage – the audacity to challenge status quos in spite of sacrifices one has to pay. It has taken Hard work – the discipline of doing what is required even when no one is watching. It has taken Focus – believing in one thing and following through despite the enticements of nice options. And it has taken Pursuit – the daily enthusiasm and responsibility that you owe to life.

Indeed, dreams come true, but you have to give it all it takes. When criticism was much about his education status, George Weah had to enroll in a Miami University where he studied Business Administration. He did his personal SWOT, and took advantage of opportunities in his external environment by using all the strength within his control. Anyone can be someone significant!
