Between Leaders and Followers, Where Should Change Begin From?
As we all know, a good leader should lead by example so as to enable the followers to do the same. Firstly, I will proceed by explaining who a leader is.
A leader is a person who leads a group of people, especially the head of a country or an established organization. He is a person that holds a dominant or superior position within their field, and is able to exercise a high degree of control or influence over others. A true leader knows who he is and what he stands for. They know their values and the rule they will abide by, regardless of the circumstances they are surely going to face.
However, the follower is one who accept the guidance, command or leadership of another, regardless of who he or she is. Followers can also be regarded as the people of a given country, who are expected to support their leaders in their decision making process and policy for the country.
For change to effectively take place in a country, it has to start from the leaders who have been elected or chosen by the people to rule them. In other words, it is the function of leaders to proceed with the first step to change the economic situation of the country.
Let’s examine Nigeria for instance, leaders are more to blame. Our leaders abandoned the law, thereby indirectly teaching the people to do the same. Our leaders made the law which says that, whoever steals public money must be brought to face the law. Meanwhile they are busy extracting public money for the benefit of their family, not minding the fact that there are thousands of people dying of hunger all over the country. Consequently, these now lead people into committing crimes.
Nigerian leaders granted the press and citizens freedom of speech, but influence them secretly to rap truths in packages of corruption. Unless these anomalies by our leaders are corrected, the followers will be made to continue to follow those bad footsteps. Their excuse would be, “after all our leaders do the same!”
Another reason why change should start from leaders is the inability of the government to provide enough jobs for the jobless youth. Many of them struggled their way out of school with good results, but for one reason or another, they have to change career so as to make ends meet. Many turn to social vices like stealing, armed robbery, kidnapping, militancy, prostitution, drug trafficking, even human trafficking and so on, as a means of survival.

Greatness starts from knowing what to do and doing it!
Leadership is not only found at national or governmental levels, it also occurs in homes. What are parents who happen to be leaders of the family teaching their children? At a very young age, children are exposed to negative influences because of their parents’ bad leadership.
In order for leaders to effectively change, they also need the full support of their followers. Leaders and followers have to work hand-in-hand to effect a desirable change in the country. If this can work out between leaders and followers, there would be reduction in crime rate, provision of employment as well as existence of peace in the country.
