The World Book Day, UK’s version is marked on the first Thursday in March. The yearly event organized by UNESCO normally comes up on April 23rd to promote reading, publishing, and copyright. This year’s edition was celebrated in Nigeria with a landmark achievement – Guinness World Record for the Longest Marathon Reading Aloud. In a bold effort which commenced on Monday February 26, 2018 at 1:30pm, Olubayode Treasures Olawunmi took the world by storm. By 3:30pn on Saturday March 2, Bayode had read about 17 books covering 120 hours to break the previous record in 2008, by a Nepali who read for 113 hours.
Books read by Bayode included The Carnivorous City by Toni Kan, Manyika’s Independence by Sarah Ladipo, Easy Motion Tourist by Laye Adenle, Born on a Tuesday by Elnathan John among many others. Nigerians have been shattering World Records in the recent times though scarcely in intellectual field. This feat sounds a bold statement affirming the Nation’s scope of potentials.
The sponsor of the project, GTBank submitted that the event was about promoting African literature and reading culture in Nigeria. While speaking at YouRead Library Yaba, Lagos where the event took place, GTBank YouRead coordinator said it’s the bank’s effort at reversing the downward trend in reading culture among the populace.
The 40-year old, father of three and alumnus of Osun State Polytechnic Iree, only took two hours break every 24 hours. The break was to tidy up, eat and have a little nap. The library at Yaba, Lagos was packed daily with guests, and representatives from different literary establishments including the Lagos State government.
