It was a case of moderate elation on March 22, 2018 when most of the 110 abducted Dapchi girls were returned under a covert condition. After 33 days of their abduction, 105 girls and a boy returned but sadly, 5 girls had died due to suffocation. Also, a girl is being held back because she refused to convert to Islam.
We are happy about those who have been freed to reunite with their families, yet we are so sad about the dead and the one still in captivity. Their lives are equally important. Heartfelt condolence to the parents who lost their precious children.
According to the account of one of the freed girls who spoke to journalists in Hausa language, the remaining girl being a Christian, refused to accept the terrorist’s condition for releasing her. That is to convert to Islam. She however admitted that they were neither molested nor starved. She said those five girls died because of the chocking condition in the van while they were being carted away. But now that it remains that girl alone, who knows what she might be going through? It is not a success yet until she comes back hale and hearty; the government should take note!
According to Nata Sharibu, the father of the only Dapchigirl still with boko haram, his daughter chose not to convert to Islam when the terrorists asked her and her colleagues to do so. He expressed delight that she chose to hold on to her Christian faith, but was worried about her safety and prayed for her safe return. Imagine how emotionally distressing this could be for this father! On one hand, you’re happy your daughter is uncompromising. On the other hand, you’re sad she is still in the custody of the God forsaken terrorists, going through the unthinkable. This is a serious persecution for the little innocent girl!
The least we could do is to join Nata Sharibu in fervent prayer…
O Lord God, to whom vengeance belongs – O God, to whom vengeance belongs, show Yourself. Rise up, O Judge of the earth; render punishment to the proud…Cause our sister Leah Sharibu and others including the remaining Chibok girls to be released! O Lord, reward this girl’s act of courage and faithfulness. Contend with those that contend with us and save our children. In Jesus name!
