"But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and of the firstborn who are registered in heaven, to God the judge of all, to the spirit of just men made perfect, to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel." (Hebrews 12:22-24)
It marvels me as I observe many people still adhering by mystical powers to aid there living in our world. A vast number of others who might not patronize dark powers live succumbed to the diabolic powers that controls human affairs in the world. Within the mix is a vast majority who are neither here nor there. The later group of people do well by believing in God but they deny the effectiveness of His power by seeking help from mystical source to support that they get from God. To the first group of people I say, in a matter of time, you will realize the distinction between those who serve God and those who don’t. That God allows you and your crooked ways to exist or thrive doesn’t imply weakness, rather He is allowing you ample chance to change from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of light. Much of my address apply to those in the second and the third groups. You do not have to succumb to the world’s wickedness, you do not have to be an hypocrite, you have more power than you realize!
On its own, a lion is powerless against a rhinoceros or a buffalo but it takes a group of lions in their pride or coalition to overpower a rhino. Most of us are faced with rhino-sized or buffalo-strong challenges and we’ve been making efforts as lone rangers. With such magnitude of life issues, a solitary soldier would always be inundated, leading to defeat, feeling of powerlessness, and low esteem. Understanding the forces at work and resources available in Zion will restore us with the required confidence to fight the good fight faith.
Taking a cue from the Master Himself, no sooner than He started His ministry that He assembled a team of twelve committed men, "…that they should be with Him…" (Mark 3:14) Most times, He was in their company, even when He had to go and pray in seclusion, three of them would stay close-by (Matthew 17:1). Jesus is always in fellowship because "two are better than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble…A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken."(Ecc 4:9,10,12 NLT)
Mount Zion, under the prevailing covenant (sealed with the blood of Jesus) is the spiritual fellowship that ensues anytime and anywhere two or three persons are gathered in the name of Jesus. The term Mount Zion evolved from being a historical fact to being a prophetic fact and contemporarily, a spiritual fact. In a similar sense, Mount Zion evolved from being a physical demography to being a prophetic demography and then a spiritual demography. Zion is a mountain in Jerusalem, originally occupied by the Jebusites whom the Israelis had to put up with until David. David and his team were able to capture Zion, built a citadel and a palace on it, then it became ‘the city of David’. In the books of prophets, Zion is used to denote Jerusalem in general and sometimes God’s chosen Israel. However, under this dispensation, when the veil covering the holy of holies has been taken off – signifying freedom to worship for all and decentralization of the place of worship – Zion now denotes the Church of God (Heb 12:22).
Church is simply a fellowship of two or more people in the name of Jesus (Matthew 18:20). Further to that in Hebrews 12:22, we are introduced to the powerful realm and the matchless spiritual entities that gather with us whenever we come to Zion – fellowship. Here is the list:
- The city of the living God,
- The heavenly Jerusalem,
- An innumerable company of angels,
- The general assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven,
- God the judge of all,
- The spirits of just men made perfect,
- Jesus the mediator of the new covenant,
- The blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel.
Can you beat that? No wonder we read, "They go from strength to strength; each one appear before God in Zion." (Psalm 84:7) The excellency of the power at our disposal in the fellowship is unprecedented. The majesty and glory therein is transcendental! We are so privileged! But it takes deep understanding to appropriate this privilege and great insight to walk in it’s consciousness. I’d like to unveil few details about those domineering components in the spiritual realm of our fellowships, watch out for part two.
