Information agency of the Nigerian Army moved from telling the public that boko haram had been technically defeated months ago to an assurance that the terrorist group has been totally defeated in a recent press release. It’s thus heart-breaking to hear over the news of the abduction of 94 students from a school in Yobe by armed men suspected to be boko haram terrorists. How in the world could this have happened? 94 students, all girls in a state where there are security forces!
Saharareporters has it that the incidence happened around 7 pm on Monday, February 19, 2018 when the dare devil attacked Dapchi town in Yobe State, targeting Government Girls Science and Technical Secondary School. When the dusts were settled and the roll call was made, school authority were said to have revealed that 94 students could not be accounted for.
According to Vanguard, a school teacher who pleaded anonymity was reported to have said that the insurgents went into the hostels and many students scaled the fence. 610 out of 704 students were accounted for and it was not known whether the remaining 94 were abducted or not. The source was said to be calling on parents to update the school with the report of their children arriving at home or not.
However, in a swift response made on Tuesday by Yobe Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abdulmaliki Sumonu – no one was killed and no schoolgirl was abducted in the attack. He was reported to have confirmed the incidence but that, the attackers only carted away food stuffs and shot sporadically in the air causing students and staff to run for safety. Although the Commissioner of Police said that investigation was still ongoing, yet he said there was no report of abduction of any of the girls in the school.
We should therefore believe the words of the COMPOL until there is an authoritative evidence concerning the purported abduction of the students by book haram.
