Why Most Children Want to become a Doctor

become a doctor

Ironically, many doctors would not wish their wards become doctors. This is not unconnected with the rigor it takes to become and the sacrifice it takes to continue to be one. It’s not just about the four years as an undergraduate, you’d have to spend between 3-8 years in the medical school depending on your area of specialization. Doctors in training do not have the luxury of fun as their counterparts. Yet, job satisfaction afterwards is not commensurate with expectations.

However, the percentage of kids who are really obsessive with the ambition of becoming a future doctor is amazing. Why is this so?

Admiring a Life Saver

While children do not understand the detail of any profession, they know this one professional very well. When they are so weak and could neither eat nor play with friends, they are taken to him and he saves their lives. When they have cough or running temperature, they’re taken to this professional and he saves their lives. Children know there are people working in other offices. They also hear the title of yet, other professionals who do important things. But there is just this one professional whose service is so relevant, comforting, and life-saving. He is a medical doctor; he dresses neatly; he is well behaved; in fact, he is a role mode; and "I’d like to be like him in the future!"

That is the mindset of young chaps throughout grade levels. Contacts with medical doctors from the cradle is influential. The desire is further strengthened as they perceive the prestige in the medical profession. Beside the desire to put on a fine outlook, children also hear that doctors are well paid. It is perceivable that among other professions, doctors don’t seem to go around looking for job. And for children, that is definitely the place to be.

Be Seen as One of the Best

The complex that if you are not going to become a medical doctor, it is because you are not good enough is also a factor. Trend and statistics have informed the content of discussions and conclusions in the social psyche passed on to generations. It is evident that only the bests qualify and get selected to study medicine. So, the desire to be among the best informs a child’s aspiration to become a doctor. It is the social class every grade leveler wants to be identified with. ‘And if you’re not their, you must be second-class upstairs’. Incredible as it sounds, it is the reality. But it is a complex!

Best Way to Choose a Future Profession

While the horizons is still narrow as it is with children, whatever fascinates them would persist unflinchingly. Deliberate action at widening their frame of reference is essential. Children must be helped to discover their natural talent. Talent is the main pointer to a future of fulfilling career life. But most people know so less about talent than the ability for artistic perform.

Meanwhile, there are seven distinct categories of talent which are well described and illustrated in this all important book – Practical Guide to Choosing the Right Career Path. At the level when a child needs to choose which field to study out of Science, Humanities, Business, and Technology, the knowledge of the types of talent they posses, related university courses and the examples of different profession each leads to is very important.
