Are You Ready for This – Mobile App for Adolescent Sexuality Education by UNESCO?
UNESCO, in its strategy on education for health and well-being is taking steps to ensure that all children and young people have access to Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE). To this end, a mobile application is being developed to educate adolescents in Africa on sexual and reproductive health.
The first version of the app is being developed through expert collaboration between, an NGO named African Network for Education, Health and Citizenship (RAES), a digital agency YUX, and UNESCO. In their engagement with young people from five countries in West and Central Africa, they’ve been able to analyze situations and adapt expectations and needs of adolescents to this digital solution.
Obviously, adolescents are at risk of STIs, HIV, sexual abuse, and unwanted pregnancy, but difficulties in accessing health information and care are increasing. Deficient school curricula, inadequate preparation for puberty, cultural and religious impediments, taboos, stigmatization, are a few.
No doubt, the mobile app would evade those barriers and make information accessible to the targets in a matter of clicks. But what are the demerits?
Demerits of the Sexuality Education App
Traditional sexuality education teaches the virtue of abstinence as the right thing. But Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) imparts the orientation that you can do what you like safely.
CSE is a right-based sex education approach for school children. It promotes sexual rights to children and this is at the expense of their sexual health. The explicit nature of CSE is a violation of the health and innocence of children because it promotes risky sexual behavior and promiscuity to children as normal, unlike the traditional sex education. Click here to see numerous examples which are direct excerpts from various CSE program manuals.
Interestingly, once this mobile app is rolled out, the sales of condoms, and contraceptive pills will sky-rocket. Yes! And that’s why this kind of initiative can never lack funding.
What to Do?
Enough of sitting back, playing only reactionary role towards the promotion of one’s values. Once CSE becomes digitized in Africa and the forces behind it include UNESCO, UNAIDS and others, stopping it is impracticable, except you’ll play a North Korea. Anyone with superior values must proactively develop their own and compete in the digital space. Otherwise, the super story continues!
