On 8th of March 2017, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization UNESCO flagged off her week for Peace and Sustainable Development: The Role of Education, in Canada. In support of the week, the UNESCO Global Education Monitoring (GED) Report has launched a youth photo contest, which is believed to aim at generating contributions and drive awareness towards her two major educational approaches. The two major educational approaches of UNESCO namely, Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and Global Citizenship Education (GCED), strive to provide everyone with the opportunity to acquire the needed knowledge, skills, attitudes and values to foster a just, peaceful and sustainable future.
Goal Number 4 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations focuses on quality education and aims to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all”. Extended from this goal are a number of targets, one of which is target 4.7 – " By 2030, ensure that all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, including, among others, through education for sustainable development and sustainable lifestyles, human rights, gender equality, promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence, global citizenship and appreciation of cultural diversity and of culture’s contribution to sustainable development"
