The Right School Versus The Best School

7 Step to Choosing The Best Secondary School for Your Child.

After reading this, you’ll be able to determine whether the best school you desire is the right school for your wards. Everyone definitely desire the best possible for their child. However the superlative, ‘best’ is actually subject to some pre-defined criteria when it comes to comparison within a competitive industry as educational institutions. Generally, such criteria include, overall student performance in external examinations, level of modern facilities in the school, social status of the patrons, among others.

When it comes to individual decision, care should be taken not be carried away with the glittering and compelling attributes of the so called bests. You should take a second look at how a typical best school gets to that status. It may actually be their strategy for ensuring that the best share of the market is magnetized. Do you know, that there are schools where curriculum focus is predicated on preparing students to pass external tests and exam? Likewise, there are schools where the high level of infrastructure and learning facility obtainable is nothing but business strategies. Well, they get all the accolades, by achieving best average performances in external test, and stay in the news. They are revered and spoken of with a hush of admiration and every well meaning parent or guardian desire to have their wards become one of the best students through them.

It’s important for you to realize that the prideful academic soundness attained by those student is highly skewed. How would you know that? Such student don’t necessarily turn out as best when they get to the environments where an all round learning capacity is demanded. This accounts for the reason why the shinning stars of the world’s economies are not necessarily the best academic performers. What an irony!

Keep this at the front of your mind, that the best school may not be the right school for you. On the other hand, the best school can possibly be the right school for you. In order to ensure that rightness goes in tandem with excellency in your search of the best school for you or your wards, following are the seven steps you could take.

  1. Your Checklist of Requirements:

First of all, make a list of what your child needs in a school. You might have watched your child and discovered a trait, talent or special need which if put into consideration would enhance their learning and development process. There may be a need for your child to learn a foreign language. There may be a need to tailor your child’s learning towards more practicality than academic or vice versa. Whatever the needs are, the core values and deliverable of different schools are observable as indicators for meeting them. Check off your list against each option and you are on your way to finding the right school.

  2. Check The Results:

Although, exam scores is not the sole indicator that a particular school is good or not, it is an important part of the whole. So check the external exam results for a period of five consecutive sessions. Consistency in brilliant performance by students of a particular school is an indicator that the school is worth your consideration.

  3. Be a Scout at a PTA Meetings:

Pay a visit to the school on a regular day to assess the study environment and atmosphere. Also try to show up at a PTA meeting in order to witness what the parents have to discuss with the school authorities, whether critical or complimentary. Such stake holders meeting presents you a candid opportunity to know what is obtainable in the school.

  4. Ask Questions:

Interview the school principals and a number of teachers. Ask about how teachers are selected and trained. Ask about how they handle behavioural issues among students. Ask about how much work and if there is a substantial recreational time and facility for students.

  5. Talk to Parents, Students and Others:

Parents and students, been existing clients would definitely have a story to tell. There is nothing like the power or a satisfied or a dissatisfied customer. They will definitely tell their stories. In fact, while a satisfied customer may be economical with the truth, a dissatisfied customer would volunteer information on why they will never recommend the school.

  6. Consider Distance and Costs:

Another step to take is your evaluation of the distance between your residence and the school. If the school looks more like your choice but the distance is too long, there could be school bus or hostel facility to cater to this concern. Even the school bus and hostel must meet a particular set standard. In case non of those panacea is available, would you be flexible enough to relocate your residence to the school’s proximity? Did you know that Bill Gates parents relocated to the neighborhood of a school that possessed computer club and facilities in the 1960’s wen computer was yet scarce, so that the young Gates could have access and long computer time? You too can! You would also need to consider your budget. The right school for your child does not have to be exorbitant. Whatever your taste and budget are, there is surely a very good option for you.

  7. Make a Choice:

Lastly, you have to make a choice. There may be a number of equally nice options but there has to be alternative forgone. The one you choose, having thoroughly taken the steps outlined here is the right one. It may not be the publicized best but it’s surely the customized best for you. So, trust your gut and go for it.
