Bible Verses Your Pastor Will Never Show You about Tithe

After reading this piece, please let me know if your Pastor has ever discussed the Bible verses I’m going to talk about with your congregation. This is not meant to be an article against the payment of tithe. In fact, I boldly assert without equivocation that tithe is godly and sacred.

However, when it comes to the administration of tithe, we need to screen every page of the Bible and unveil hidden truth verbatim. If we do quote Malachi 3:8-12; Leviticus 27:3-33; Genesis 14:18-20; Matthew 23:23; Hebrews 7:1-10 among others, and adduce lessons to enforce compliance, we should not behave as if that is all there is.

What is My Motive?

  • To provoke clergies to live and preach the whole truth
  • To underscore the importance of personal Bible study instead of relying solely on the pulpit
  • To encourage a more responsible use of God’s money

The Left behind Bible Verses on Tithe

Deut 14:22-29 (KJV)

22 Thou shalt truly tithe all the increase of thy seed, that the field bringeth forth year by year.

23 And thou shalt eat before the LORD thy God, in the place which he shall choose to place his name there, the tithe of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the firstlings of thy herds and of thy flocks; that thou mayest learn to fear the LORD thy God always.

24 And if the way be too long for thee, so that thou art not able to carry it; or if the place be too far from thee, which the LORD thy God shall choose to set his name there, when the LORD thy God hath blessed thee:

25 Then shalt thou turn it into money, and bind up the money in thine hand, and shalt go unto the place which the LORD thy God shall choose:

26 And thou shalt bestow that money for whatsoever thy soul lusteth after, for oxen, or for sheep, or for wine, or for strong drink, or for whatsoever thy soul desireth: and thou shalt eat there before the LORD thy God, and thou shalt rejoice, thou, and thine household,

27 And the Levite that is within thy gates; thou shalt not forsake him; for he hath no part nor inheritance with thee.

28 At the end of three years thou shalt bring forth all the tithe of thine increase the same year, and shalt lay it up within thy gates:

29 And the Levite, (because he hath no part nor inheritance with thee,) and the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, which are within thy gates, shall come, and shall eat and be satisfied; that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all the work of thine hand which thou doest.

Deut 26:12-13 (KJV)

12 When thou hast made an end of tithing all the tithes of thine increase the third year, which is the year of tithing, and hast given it unto the Levite, the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, that they may eat within thy gates, and be filled

13 Then thou shalt say before the LORD thy God, I have brought away the hallowed things out of mine house, and also have given them unto the Levite, and unto the stranger, to the fatherless, and to the widow, according to all thy commandments which thou hast commanded me: I have not transgressed thy commandments, neither have I forgotten them…

How Non-Christians Pay Tithe and Enjoy the Blessing

Most sermons from the pulpit have attached blessings (power and grace to prosper) to the payment of tithe. Of course the Bible said that. But there are several non-Christians who don’t pay tithe and are more blessed than Christians who pay tithe.

The inferential factor might be that, they actually pay tithe. shockingly but of a truth, they pay it to God, albeit not in the Church! If you take cognizance of what God instructed the Israelis to do with their tithe, you would infer that its purpose is for social welfare. Little wonder He said in the popular ‘Malachi’ "…that there may be food in My house"

Apparently, that billionaire might not be a Christian and obviously does not pay tithe like we do but s/he has a budget for social welfare, which is executed religiously. So the benefits accrue to them because the principle works without prejudice! You may thus ask, how does the tithe gets to God?

"And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me." – Matt 25:40 (KJV)

Will that substitute for their need to surrender to the Lordship of Jesus?

NO! Nothing can substitute for the righteousness available in the blood of Jesus; obtainable by believing in and receiving Him.

Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. – Acts 4:12 (KJV)

But as many as received Him (Jesus), to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name. – John 1:12 (KJV)

In conclusion, as I read my bible from cover to cover, I discover that with regards to some laws, God deals with people according to the level of their understanding, development, civilization, and spiritual dispensation. Before Moses (the law), God dealt with the Patriarchs in a particular way – Abraham paid tithe from a war plunder; Jacob vowed to give a tithe of all that God would give him. In the advent of the law – there was a time God commanded the Israelis to eat the farm produce they brought as tithe in His presence; there was a time He told them to give the tithes to the priests, the strangers, the orphans, and the widows for them to eat and be satisfied; in Malachi, He told the Priests to bring all tithes and offering to His storehouse. When Grace came – in Matthew, He reprimanded the scribes and Pharisees for raising the standards of tithe payment and neglecting the more important matters of mercy, justice, and faith; in Hebrews, the Holy Spirit alluded to a fact that God received tithe from Abraham and the Levites through Melchizedek, but now Jesus has a more excellent ministry.

In the present age, what is God saying concerning the administration of tithe? Let the clergy watch and pray. We can no longer hide behind autocracy and neglect the weightier matters of mercy, justice and the work of faith. It is obvious that God was not the one who ate the farm produce given by the Israelis. So also, He is not the One spending the moneys given by people nowadays. Even clergies (Levites) are no longer prohibited from acquiring private properties as it used to be under the law. So, why can’t we allow justice and mercy to flow like a river? No one in the society should be allowed to go to bed hungry. Quality education should be more affordable in the kingdom than in the secular world. Housing, healthcare and social infrastructure in the kingdom need not be as exorbitant as it is out there. What is God saying about the administration of tithe nowadays? Indeed, beyond tithe, offering and vows, all we have is given by Him and belongs to Him.
