7 Tips to Motivate Teenagers to Study
Strategies to motivate teenagers to study must be mastered just as managers master the theories of motivation. Aren’t you surprised, that though staff in an organization are being paid, yet they require motivation for sustained performance?
Teen age is a stage in life when a considerable level of autonomy has been reached. An individual could on their own volition take responsibility or indulge in frivolity. More so, as action or inaction is ordinarily dependent on pleasure and pain, a teenager chooses play above study by default.
Can you imagine what could have become of Ben Carson, had his Mum not taken action? He could have ended up as a failure. But thank goodness! And yes, Mrs. Sonya Carson! Today, Ben is a minister in Trump’s administration, following a successful medical career.
These 7 tips will help you as a parent or guardian to disrupt the failure-bound default and call out the greatness in that child.
1. LEAD BY EXAMPLE
To motivate a teenager to study, you must lead by example. Social learning is crucial! It is a reason for differential outcomes between the growing ups in a university community and those in a commercial community. If that teenager sees your own effort at constant development, s/he gets the strongest of influence to replicate great attitude. But if all you do at your spare time is fiddle with phone, watch TV or chat away, issuing instruction to carry their book and read would be as chasing the wind.
2. REIGNFORCE LITTLE EFFORTS
Where you see your teenager making independent efforts at studying, seize the occasion to praise them for doing so. A word of affirmation when you catch them doing the right thing is quite effective. Don’t always catch them doing wrong, but catch them more in the right act and praise them. Good of you! That’s my queen! You rock baby! This is your applause! Great, you’re getting there! Yes you did it, hi-five! Use these kinds of words often and see the transformation.
3. MAKE IT FUN
A common issue with teenagers is boredom. Traditionally, studying isn’t fun. And you want to motivate teenagers to study. You could help them overcome the drudgery by making learning fun with technology. There is probably a multimedia, image-rich, or video version of any subject nowadays. Acquire the resources for them.
You could also encourage them to join a community of other learners via platforms like Google Classroom, summer camp, code academy and so on. Introduce them to interesting extra-curriculum education. This had helped the Zuckerbergs and Gates of this world. Truly, curriculum activity must get to a point of diminishing returns, so provide them an interesting alternative which is intellectually stimulating as well.
4. TASK THEM AND REWARD PERFORMANCE
Just like Sonya Carson tasked her children to read and summarize two books from the library per week, task the genius in your teenager. Set them up for quiz, debate, fabrication, or art and craft. And always reward them for rising up to the challenge, not necessarily when they emerge the best.
5. EXPOSE THEM TO A COMMUNITY OF STUDIOUS PEOPLE
When growing ups observe that everyone around them is living purposefully, they’ll have no choice but conform. In fact, human brain develops in conformity to the environmental requirements. Building a community of studious people will motivate teenagers to study.

6. CREATE A CONDUCIVE ATMOSPHERE
Imagine if the most conducive apartment in your house is the study room! Now and then, every member of the family would want to escape into the study room and spend some time. Yes! It’s helpful to invest in a home library or a studio and equip it with valuable resources. This will go a long way to motivate teenagers to study.
7. ENCOURAGE THEIR NATURAL TALENT
I read a fantastic book where the authors devoted a whole chapter to describing the seven categories of talent. Once you notice your teenager is exhibiting traits in a particular talent, you should make resources available to them that would encourage the development of that talent. To motivate a teenager to study becomes cheap when you’re not forcing them into a mold of your own wish, but their individual uniqueness. Their is no talent that is not economically viable if adequately pursued. So encourage your teenager to dig for treasure in the areas of their natural abilities.
No doubt, we are loosing the attention of our teenagers to the popular media, but with conscientious effort we can redirect their interest. It is important to lead by example among other things. It is also appropriate to find a way to take the study to them on those popular media. Individual family can use these 7 tips but community efforts would be more profound to motivate teenagers to study.
