THE SIGNIFICANCE OF CHEMISTRY TO NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
(An article by Semilore Olatunji)
Chemistry is the study of substances and their reactions; their application in forming new substances; the structure and properties of substances. It is also described as the science that is concerned with the composition and the structure of matter and with the forces that holds the structures together.
Why do people need chemistry? Well, chemistry is a major subject for people who aspire to study medicine in their strive to become doctors. As chemistry is needed, in the medical field, so also is it needed in disciplines related to environment, food, engineering, metallurgy, cosmetics and so on.
For instance, drugs, soaps, detergents, oil, margarine, plastic, drinks and more are all products of chemistry. Just imagine life without chemistry! This products helping us go through life daily wouldn’t have been produced and living would have been accompanied with endless unease.
Chemistry helps us to know about the handling of chemicals, their application and their use. If we as humans do not have the knowledge of chemistry, occurrence of disasters leading to death of humans, animals and plants would have been ubiquitous. This would be due to non-availability of chemistry-based research for the production of drugs, fertilizers and other useful compounds.
There is no way we can go through life without chemistry. It plays a major role in the survival of humans, animals and plants.
Secondly, there are various job opportunities for youths because of chemistry, these include agricultural scientist, environmental health officer, information scientist, research scientist and much more.
Thirdly, there are various uses of chemistry in the nation. It aids making of clothes, shelter, provision of ammunition for the military, medicine, transportation and others. Chemistry opens door to many careers. It is sometimes called “central science” because it lies between biology and physics.
Now it is very obvious that chemistry aids National development. Chemistry also provides the country with foreign exchange which also makes the country more advanced.
In conclusion, chemistry helps in so many ways in supporting life and existence. So it will be quite helpful if countries try to give chemistry more attention than usual. THANKS.
