Admission University of Ibadan

"About 60000 candidates picked University of Ibadan, 20949 sat for Post UTME, 9266 scored 50 and above…we can only offer admission to 3500."

Those were the words of the Vice Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Prof Idowu Olayinka. He made the statement on October 30th while fielding questions on Diamond FM, University of Ibadan.

The VC asserted that, though the university has the opportunity of giving admission to 7000, it will only admit few undergraduates due to its policy of increasing admission spaces for post-graduate students. Olayinka declared that the university is yet to fix its cut-off mark, but the 200 benchmark which was a criterion for students to participate in the Post UTME was done in order to set standard.

Considering the forgoing, it is my opinion that admission seekers these days should wise up. In 2016 UI admitted 3,855 undergraduates (according to JAMB). Currently, the institution is planning on 3,500. You can be sure that next one would be lower. So if you’re an average student, there are some universities and courses you shouldn’t waste your time and money to pursue.

Prof Olayinka observed that Federal universities are hugely oversubscribed while there are other universities which are grossly undersubscribed. What a contrast!

Prospective candidates still believe that the name of some universities is an automatic opener to employers doors. Indeed, it used to be so but shockingly, industries are not even there any longer nowadays.

What are you looking for in a tertiary education? If it is just a certificate, you’re wrong!

I have a suggestion: seek skill acquisition and entrepreneurship prowess. Why? Because organizations can no longer tolerate incompetent manpower!

Any tertiary education that does not impart you with industry competency is a waste of time. Even most of the universities are still running outdated curricula. The only education that’s relevant for this age is the one that equips you with a drive! So much that immediately after your graduation, if there is no employment, you will create your own enterprise.
