Sex Education Demystified (Part Three)

What Should Be The Mode of Teaching? Natural moments of opportunity to teach sex education present themselves daily. We should not allow any of those moments to slip by. Such moments include the time when children come up with questions that borders their mind or they are curious about. Though, children don’t know the right time for asking some kind of questions.

Embarrassing situation may ensue when questions are asked at odd times, but parents with growing kids should master the art of practicing liquid perspectives, which is capable of diffusing tense atmosphere with light mood.

Other natural moment may be when you hear them use sexually abusive words or gesture to convey displeasure during social interaction among peers. For instance, using the ‘f’ word reveals lack of character and dignity and you will not hear such from responsible people. In simple terms, teaching your child the right things about sex should primarily flow from informal situations of daily life. Secondarily, you can schedule a regular time of the month when you and your child talk over a dinner or game in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Gist with your child, talk about the visibly pregnant woman, the baby in the cot, the couple holding hands as they walk, the animals mating in the park, the biology class, and so on.

Right from the tender age, help your child to interact with friends or group of friends made up of both sexes. By this, he/she would grow up with proper relationship perspective, an ability to relate with the opposite sex without sexual proclivity. You could do this by encouraging him/her to invite friends over for game time, dinner and discussion. Join them in play, open up a line of discussion to examine their quality of thinking and seize the occasion to speak to their conscience and inculcate virtuous manners.

Should Boys and Girls Be Taught Separately? Generally, it is liberating to have both male and female children taught about sex in the same venue. Doing so enables each gender to treat the other with respect and to appreciate their differences. It helps in inculcating into them, the capacity and perspective that interacting with the opposite sex is not tantamount to having sex with him/her. However, when it comes to showing some intricacies, especially to girls, Tom and Debby should be pulled apart. That doesn’t mean, it’s a taboo for boys to know what’s happening inside girls closets, but that privacy is exclusive and must be well respected.

What If A Child Crosses The Line? While engaging your child with the advance level of sex education, you would have secured their agreement to certain guidelines with regards to dating or relationship with the opposite sex. Most parents wish their children would not have to engage in dating or develop feeling for the opposite sex. Some parents live in denial, as if it does not happen.

But the smart parent, though reluctantly, would rather set guidelines. it’s important our children know that every year they delay dating, they increase their chances for emotional maturity. When they are emotionally mature, they’ll be able to identify true love and prevent unnecessary heartbreaks. A staggering statistics shows that 91% of girls who date by age twelve end up having sex before the end of high school. Crossing such line can result in devastating events like unplanned pregnancy, unplanned fatherhood, diseases and emotional sickness.

Parents should know that, try as they may, the children, being free moral agents would still carry out their own decision. Irrespective of the sound teachings and guidelines, each child chooses his/her behaviour per time. So a child might have been well tutored but still act contrary. To this end, parent should have a room for forgiveness. A child should know, that in the event they find themselves in such distasteful issues, though irreversible pain and stigma is inevitable for both parent and child, the best place to find solution and succor is still the home.

Let your child know that failure or let down is not the end the world, there will still be another chance to live a good life, though not without the scars from the blown away first opportunity.
